Tacoma Tire Size Calculator Formula
For a metric tire such as 265/70R17:
- 265 is nominal section width in millimetres.
- 70 means sidewall height is 70% of section width.
- 17 is wheel diameter in inches.
Sidewall height (in) = width (mm) × aspect ratio ÷ 100 ÷ 25.4
Overall diameter = wheel diameter + 2 × sidewall height
Circumference = π × overall diameter
Geometric revolutions per mile = 63,360 ÷ circumference in inches
Published manufacturer revolutions-per-mile values can differ from the geometric result because a loaded tire deforms and real tire dimensions vary by model and rim width.

The comparison works with both metric and flotation notation. A metric tire is calculated from section width, aspect ratio and wheel diameter. A flotation size such as 33×12.50R17 already states nominal overall diameter and width in inches, so the calculator derives sidewall height from the stated tire and wheel diameters.
Speedometer Error After a Tire Change
A taller tire travels farther per wheel revolution. If the vehicle is still calibrated for the old tire, actual speed is approximately:
Actual speed = indicated speed × new tire diameter ÷ old tire diameter
For example, if the replacement tire is 5% taller, an indicated 60 mph corresponds to roughly 63 mph before any calibration correction.

Wheel diameter is only one part of tire size. Moving from a 16-inch wheel to a 17- or 18-inch wheel does not automatically make the entire tire taller because the new tire may use a shorter sidewall. This calculator reports wheel-diameter change separately from overall tire-diameter change.

Will a Larger Tire Fit My Tacoma?

What does 265/70R17 mean?
It describes a nominal 265 mm section width, a sidewall height equal to 70% of that width, radial construction and a 17-inch wheel.
How much does a larger tire change ground clearance?
Only half of the diameter increase becomes additional static axle/ground clearance. A tire that is 2 inches taller adds about 1 inch of geometric clearance.
Why is actual tire diameter sometimes different from the calculator?
Metric and flotation size markings are nominal. Actual mounted diameter varies by tire model, tread depth, inflation, load and approved rim width. Use the tire manufacturer’s specifications when exact clearance matters.
Does a larger Tacoma tire affect gearing?
Yes. A taller tire reduces engine and wheel revolutions for a given road speed, making the effective final-drive ratio numerically lower. That can reduce RPM but can also reduce mechanical advantage.
Does this calculator tell me whether 33s or 35s will fit?
No. It tells you their dimensions and drivetrain effects. Real 33- or 35-inch fitment can require changes to suspension, alignment, wheel offset and body clearance depending on the Tacoma.
