Transmission Repair Cost Calculator
Estimate transmission service, rebuild and replacement costs or check an itemized shop quote using transparent parts and labor inputs.
Estimate a transmission repair planning range or build an itemized shop-quote total from parts, labor, diagnostic charges, fluids and other known costs.
Transmission cost estimate
Use this transmission repair cost calculator to estimate a realistic planning range before you approve work, or switch to the itemized quote mode to check a shop estimate line by line. Transmission work spans routine fluid service, electronic controls, internal rebuilding and complete replacement, so the calculator keeps those jobs separate instead of presenting one misleading average.
Why transmission repair prices vary so much
The phrase “transmission repair” can describe very different jobs. A scheduled fluid change may cost a few hundred dollars, while replacing an entire transmission can cost several thousand. Vehicle design, transmission type, parts availability, shop labor rate, local taxes and whether a unit is rebuilt, remanufactured or replaced all affect the final invoice.
RepairPal’s September 2026 national estimate lists a transmission fluid change at about $294 to $356, while its transmission replacement estimate is $6,238 to $6,764. Kelley Blue Book publishes a broader replacement planning range of roughly $2,900 to $7,100 and emphasizes that make, model, transmission type and rebuild-versus-remanufactured choice matter.
Choose the right repair path before comparing prices
Fluid and filter service
Routine service is different from fixing an internal failure. RepairPal currently estimates a basic transmission fluid change at $294 to $356 nationally and a transmission filter plus fluid change at $621 to $785. Vehicle-specific prices can be materially lower or higher.
Electrical and control repairs
Modern transmissions depend on sensors, solenoids and control modules. A transmission control module replacement is currently estimated by RepairPal at about $929 to $1,006 nationally. A fault code does not automatically mean the whole transmission needs replacement, which is why diagnosis matters.
Rebuild versus replacement
A rebuild opens the existing transmission and replaces worn internal components. A replacement swaps the unit for another used, rebuilt, remanufactured or new assembly. Published ranges overlap because vehicle complexity and parts sourcing vary widely. The calculator uses a broad rebuild planning range and the current Kelley Blue Book replacement range, then lets you apply a transparent local adjustment instead of hiding a make/model multiplier.
How the planning-range mode works
Select the closest repair path. The calculator starts with the published or documented planning range and applies your optional percentage adjustment to both ends:
Adjusted low = published low × (1 + adjustment %) + known extra fees
Adjusted high = published high × (1 + adjustment %) + known extra fees
Leave the adjustment at zero unless you have a reason to change it. A luxury vehicle, specialty transmission, high-cost metro shop or difficult parts situation may push a quote above national benchmarks, while a simpler vehicle or lower-cost market can fall below them.
How to check a transmission repair quote
The itemized mode is useful when a shop has already given you parts and labor numbers. Enter the transmission or parts cost, labor hours, hourly labor rate, diagnostic charge, fluid/supplies and other known fees. The calculator multiplies labor hours by the labor rate and adds the components into one total.
If your state taxes automotive parts or shop supplies, you can enter that rate separately. The calculator applies that tax only to the parts and supplies fields because labor-tax rules differ by state and locality.
Transmission repair cost example
Suppose a quote includes $2,500 in parts, 10 labor hours at $150 per hour, a $150 diagnostic fee and $250 in fluid and shop supplies. Before tax or other charges, the estimate is $4,400. The itemized result makes it easy to see that $1,500 of the total is labor and $2,500 is the main transmission/parts line.
When a calculator is not enough
Transmission symptoms can be caused by components outside the transmission. RepairPal specifically recommends proper diagnosis because electronic faults and other vehicle systems can mimic transmission failure. If a shop recommends replacement without explaining the diagnosis, ask what tests were performed, what fault codes were found, what warranty applies to the replacement unit, and whether rebuilding or a smaller repair was considered.
Do not continue driving a vehicle that is losing drive, slipping severely, overheating, leaking heavily or showing a safety-related warning just because a calculator suggests a lower-cost repair might exist.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a transmission repair cost calculator?
It is best used for planning and quote comparison. Exact cost requires the vehicle year, make, model, VIN, diagnosis, local labor rate and the exact replacement or repair path.
How much does a transmission replacement cost?
Kelley Blue Book currently publishes a broad planning range of about $2,900 to $7,100. RepairPal’s September 2026 national average is higher, at roughly $6,238 to $6,764. Your vehicle can fall outside either range.
Is rebuilding a transmission cheaper than replacing it?
Often, but not always. A rebuild can save money when the existing case and major components are reusable. Some newer transmissions are more commonly replaced with remanufactured units because of parts availability, tooling or manufacturer practices.
Should I enter a local price adjustment?
Only when you have local evidence. If you already know that comparable quotes in your area run around 15% above a national benchmark, enter 15. Otherwise, leave the field at zero and treat the result as a national planning range.
Methodology and sources
The calculator uses current 2026 national estimates from RepairPal for transmission fluid changes, filter/fluid service, control-module replacement and full transmission replacement, plus Kelley Blue Book’s published replacement range. The rebuild range is presented as a broad planning band rather than a vehicle-specific quote. All calculations are simple arithmetic and run in your browser without reloading the page.
