Iowa Vehicle Sales Tax Calculator

Estimate Iowa’s current $10 plus 5% fee for new registration, with qualifying trade-in and manufacturer-rebate reductions and optional title/lien fees.

Estimate Iowa’s fee for new registration on a vehicle purchase, including qualifying trade-in and manufacturer-rebate reductions plus optional title, lien and known registration fees.

Iowa does not call this ordinary vehicle sales tax. Vehicles subject to registration are generally exempt from sales tax and instead use the fee for new registration: currently $10 plus 5% of the qualifying purchase price. Annual registration is a separate vehicle-specific charge.

Only enter a trade-in or manufacturer rebate if it qualifies under Iowa Code §321.105A and Revenue rule 701—250. A dealer discount, finance-company incentive, or nonqualifying rebate may be treated differently.

This Iowa vehicle sales tax calculator estimates the state charge that buyers often call vehicle sales tax. Iowa’s official terminology is different: a vehicle subject to registration is generally exempt from ordinary sales tax and instead is subject to a fee for new registration.

Under current Iowa law, that fee is $10 plus 5% of the qualifying purchase price. The fee applies to dealer purchases and private-party vehicle sales unless a specific exemption applies.

Iowa Vehicle Tax Formula

For a normal purchase:

Fee base = vehicle purchase price − qualifying trade-in allowance − qualifying manufacturer cash rebate

Fee for new registration = $10 + (fee base × 5%)

The calculator never lets qualifying reductions push the percentage base below zero. The current $10 statutory component is shown separately from the 5% component so the estimate is easy to audit.

Does Iowa Charge 5% or 6% Sales Tax on a Car?

Neither description is technically correct for a vehicle subject to registration. Iowa Department of Revenue states that these vehicle sales are exempt from sales tax and are instead subject to the 5% fee for new registration. Current Iowa Code §321.105A adds a $10 amount to that 5% calculation.

This is also why local-option sales tax is not added to a normal registered-vehicle purchase.

How Does a Trade-In Affect the Iowa Vehicle Fee?

A qualifying trade-in can reduce the purchase-price measure used for the fee. Iowa Revenue rules explain that the full qualifying trade-in allowance can be excluded even when some of that allowance pays off an existing loan on the traded vehicle. Ownership/title and transaction requirements still have to be satisfied.

If the trade-in and other qualifying reductions exceed the vehicle price, this calculator reduces the percentage base to $0 rather than creating a negative taxable amount.

Do Manufacturer Rebates Reduce the Iowa Vehicle Fee?

A qualifying manufacturer cash rebate can reduce the purchase price when it meets Iowa’s statutory and administrative-rule conditions and is applied to the vehicle purchase price. Not every promotion qualifies. For example, Iowa’s rule distinguishes a qualifying manufacturer cash rebate from rewards or payment methods that do not meet the rule.

Iowa Title and Registration Fees

The calculator optionally adds the current regular Iowa title fee of $35 and the current $20 security-interest notation fee. These amounts were increased effective January 1, 2025.

Annual vehicle registration is separate. Iowa DOT calculates annual registration from vehicle-specific information and any available registration credit. Because the exact annual amount cannot be derived reliably from purchase price alone, this calculator lets you enter a known DOT/county registration amount instead of inventing one.

Private Vehicle Sales in Iowa

The fee for new registration also applies to purchases between private individuals. Qualifying vehicle-for-vehicle trades can receive trade-in treatment under Iowa law, subject to the ownership and transaction requirements in §321.105A and Revenue rule 701—250.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Iowa vehicle sales tax rate?

For a vehicle subject to registration, Iowa generally uses a fee for new registration equal to $10 plus 5% of the qualifying purchase price rather than ordinary sales tax.

Do I pay local sales tax on an Iowa car purchase?

Generally no for a vehicle subject to registration. Iowa Revenue explains that these vehicles use the fee for new registration instead of state/local sales tax on the vehicle purchase.

Does a trade-in reduce the Iowa car tax?

A qualifying trade-in can reduce the purchase-price base. The trade must meet Iowa’s statutory requirements, so verify unusual ownership, private trade, family, business, or nondealer transactions with the county treasurer or Iowa DOR.

Does this calculator include annual Iowa registration?

Only if you enter the known annual registration amount. Iowa’s annual registration charge is separate from the one-time fee for new registration and depends on vehicle-specific data and possible registration credit.

Is the $35 Iowa title fee included?

Yes, if you leave the regular-title option enabled. You can turn it off when a title fee does not apply to your scenario.

Methodology and Sources

The $10 plus 5% fee structure is based on current Iowa Code §321.105A and Iowa Department of Revenue guidance. Trade-in and manufacturer-rebate treatment is cross-checked against Iowa Administrative Code chapter 701—250. Current title/security-interest fee amounts are cross-checked against Iowa DOT’s fee-change guidance effective January 1, 2025. This calculator is an educational estimate; the county treasurer and Iowa DOT determine the official amount for a real transaction.
