Nanny Salary Calculator
Estimate U.S. nanny gross weekly, monthly, and annual pay from an hourly rate, schedule, and overtime selection.
Estimate gross U.S. nanny pay from an hourly rate and weekly schedule, with an option to apply 1.5× overtime after 40 hours.
Estimated gross nanny pay
This calculator estimates gross cash wages only. It does not calculate federal or state payroll taxes, employee withholding, benefits, reimbursements, paid leave, workers’ compensation, agency fees, or other employer costs.
How to Use the Nanny Salary Calculator
- Enter the gross hourly rate. Use the agreed rate before employee taxes or other deductions.
- Enter hours worked per week. Use the hours the nanny is expected to work in a workweek, not a monthly average.
- Enter paid weeks per year. The calculator starts at 52 for a year-round arrangement. Reduce it if the job is seasonal or includes unpaid weeks.
- Select the overtime treatment. The default applies 1.5× the regular rate to hours over 40. Choose no overtime only when you have confirmed that treatment is appropriate for the specific employment arrangement and applicable law.
- Select Calculate Nanny Salary.
What This Nanny Salary Calculator Includes
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| Regular weekly hours and pay | Federal or state income-tax withholding |
| Optional 1.5× overtime after 40 hours | Social Security, Medicare, FUTA, or state unemployment taxes |
| Weekly gross wages | Workers’ compensation premiums |
| Average monthly gross wages | Health stipends, bonuses, PTO value, or agency fees |
| Annual gross wages | Mileage, meals, activity costs, or other reimbursements |
This separation is intentional. A salary calculator and a household-employer tax calculator answer different questions. Tax thresholds, withholding, state rules, and employer obligations can change, while the gross wage math stays simple and transparent.
How Nanny Salary Is Calculated
When the overtime option is applied, the calculator uses these formulas:
Regular Hours = the lesser of weekly hours or 40
Overtime Hours = weekly hours − 40, but not less than 0
Regular Weekly Pay = Regular Hours × Hourly Rate
Overtime Weekly Pay = Overtime Hours × Hourly Rate × 1.5
Weekly Gross Pay = Regular Weekly Pay + Overtime Weekly Pay
Annual Gross Pay = Weekly Gross Pay × Paid Weeks Per Year
Average Monthly Gross Pay = Annual Gross Pay ÷ 12
If you choose the no-overtime option, all entered weekly hours are multiplied by the base hourly rate. The calculator displays a warning when that option is selected for more than 40 hours so you remember to verify the legal treatment.
Nanny Overtime Pay in the United States
The U.S. Department of Labor explains that domestic service employees who are not covered by a specific exemption generally must receive overtime at one and one-half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. The rules for live-in domestic service workers are more nuanced: a live-in worker employed directly by an individual, family, or household may be exempt from the federal overtime requirement, while different rules can apply when a third party is the employer.
State and local wage laws can be more protective than federal law. That is why the calculator lets you choose the overtime treatment instead of assuming every nanny arrangement is identical.
Nanny Salary Example: $25 per Hour for 45 Hours a Week
Assume a live-out nanny earns $25 per hour, works 45 hours in a week, is paid for 52 weeks, and the 1.5× overtime option applies.
| Regular hours | 40 |
|---|---|
| Overtime hours | 5 |
| Regular weekly pay | $1,000.00 |
| Overtime weekly pay | $187.50 |
| Weekly gross pay | $1,187.50 |
| Average monthly gross pay | $5,145.83 |
| Annual gross pay | $61,750.00 |
| Effective hourly rate | About $26.39 |
The effective hourly rate is higher than the $25 base rate because five hours are paid at time-and-a-half.
Hourly Nanny Pay vs. Weekly, Monthly, and Annual Salary
Nanny jobs are often discussed using several pay periods at once. An employer may negotiate an hourly wage, budget by month, and think about the job as an annual salary. Converting between those figures is useful, but the underlying hourly rules still matter.
A monthly number can also be misunderstood. This calculator reports average monthly gross pay as annual gross pay divided by 12. It is not the amount of every individual paycheck. Weekly payroll produces 52 weekly pay periods in a typical year, and calendar months do not all contain the same number of weeks.
Gross Nanny Salary vs. Take-Home Pay
Gross pay is the wage before employee tax withholding and deductions. Take-home or net pay is what remains after applicable deductions. This calculator stops at gross pay because household payroll taxes depend on current tax rules and employee-specific information.
The IRS publishes a current Household Employer’s Tax Guide in Publication 926. It explains how to determine whether a household worker is an employee, when federal employment taxes may apply, and how household employers report those taxes. The dollar thresholds and tax rules can change from year to year, so an evergreen gross-pay calculator should not silently hard-code them.
Is a Nanny a Household Employee?
For federal tax purposes, the IRS generally looks at whether the household controls not only what work is done but how it is done. Publication 926 gives childcare as an example of household work and explains that full-time versus part-time status does not by itself decide whether the worker is an employee.
This calculator does not determine worker classification. If you are hiring a nanny directly, review current IRS and Department of Labor guidance or use a qualified household payroll or tax professional when needed.
Live-In vs. Live-Out Nanny Pay
Living arrangement can affect both the compensation package and the wage rules. A live-in role may include room and board, but that does not mean the cash wage can be chosen without regard to minimum-wage or state rules. Federal overtime treatment can also differ for qualifying live-in domestic workers employed directly by a household.
Because the legal and tax treatment is fact-specific, this calculator does not automatically reduce a live-in nanny’s rate or assign a dollar value to lodging. Enter the actual cash hourly rate you intend to model.
What Can Affect a Nanny’s Pay?
The calculator converts a rate into gross wages; it does not tell you what hourly rate the market will support. Actual nanny rates can vary with:
- city and local cost of living;
- years of professional childcare experience;
- infant, newborn, special-needs, or medical-care experience;
- number and ages of children;
- driving, travel, overnight, or schedule requirements;
- household-manager or family-assistant duties beyond childcare;
- education, certifications, and specialized skills;
- guaranteed hours, paid leave, health benefits, and the rest of the compensation package.
If you are still deciding the hourly rate, use local market data separately. Then return here to convert that rate into a weekly and annual gross-pay budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a nanny’s annual salary from an hourly rate?
Calculate weekly gross pay first, including overtime when applicable, then multiply by the number of paid weeks in the year. A year-round arrangement commonly uses 52 paid weeks.
Do nannies get overtime after 40 hours?
Many domestic service employees are entitled to time-and-a-half after 40 hours under federal law. A qualifying live-in domestic worker employed directly by an individual, family, or household may fall under a federal overtime exemption, and state rules can differ. Verify the rules for the actual job.
Can a nanny be paid a salary instead of hourly?
Families may describe compensation as a weekly or annual salary, but labeling pay as “salary” does not automatically remove wage-and-hour obligations. Keep accurate records of hours and confirm applicable overtime rules.
Does this nanny salary calculator include taxes?
No. It calculates gross cash wages. Household employer taxes, employee withholding, unemployment taxes, and state obligations are outside this calculator.
How is monthly nanny salary calculated?
This tool calculates annual gross pay and divides by 12 to show an average monthly amount. That is useful for budgeting but is not necessarily the amount of a monthly paycheck.
What should I enter for paid weeks per year?
Enter 52 if the nanny is paid year-round. Use a lower number only if the arrangement genuinely has unpaid weeks or is seasonal. Paid vacation is still paid time and normally should not be removed from the annual wage estimate.
Methodology and Official Sources
The wage formulas are simple arithmetic. Overtime and household-employer explanations were checked against current U.S. Department of Labor and IRS guidance. Because state and local rules can differ, the calculator is an estimate rather than payroll or legal advice.
