Gutter Calculator

Estimate gutter materials, coil yield, gutter size, seamless installation cost and gutter cleaning cost with US planning inputs.

Estimate gutter materials, seamless coil yield, drainage size, seamless gutter cost or professional gutter cleaning cost from one calculator.

Choose the task that matches your project. Drainage sizing is a planning calculation, not an engineered design or local-code approval; cost modes use national reference ranges and cannot replace local quotes.

Use this gutter calculator to plan a residential gutter project without jumping between separate tools. Choose the task you need: estimate gutter materials and hardware, convert seamless gutter coil between footage and weight, size a gutter from roof area and rainfall, estimate seamless gutter installation cost, or estimate professional gutter cleaning cost. Each mode uses different inputs because material takeoff, drainage design and service pricing are separate problems.

What can you calculate for a gutter project?

The calculator is organized around five common decisions. The materials mode works as a gutter estimate calculator for linear feet, stock sections, hangers, downspouts and fittings. The coil mode converts gutter coil yield. The sizing mode uses roof drainage inputs instead of a generic “5-inch is always enough” rule. The two cost modes estimate seamless installation and cleaning separately so the assumptions stay visible.

Mode Main inputs Main outputs
Materials & quantity Measured length, waste, section length, spacing, corners Purchase footage, sections, hangers, downspouts, optional material cost
Gutter coil Coil specification, feet or pounds, waste Required pounds or usable footage
Drainage size Projected roof area, rainfall intensity, run length, profile Design flow, outlets, minimum width, nominal size
Seamless installed cost Length, material, stories, complexity, size Low, midpoint and high planning range
Cleaning cost Length, stories, debris condition, access Professional cleaning cost range

Gutter materials and quantity estimate

Measure the roof edges that will actually receive gutter and add those runs together. The materials mode applies your selected cut or waste allowance, then divides the purchase footage by the stock section length. It also estimates hangers from the spacing you enter and a planning downspout count from your chosen spacing.

Purchase footage = measured gutter length × (1 + waste percentage)

Stock sections = round up(purchase footage ÷ section length)

The section count is based on total footage. If your project has many short independent runs, calculate each run separately before ordering because offcuts from one run may not be reusable on another.

Gutter coil calculator for seamless machines

The gutter coil calculator mode converts between finished footage and coil weight using a pounds-per-foot ratio for common aluminum coil widths and thicknesses. For example, the reference table used by the calculator lists 15-inch, 0.032-inch aluminum at about 0.571 lb per foot. A custom ratio option is included because manufacturers, alloys and specifications can differ.

Required coil weight = order footage × pounds per foot

Gross coil footage = coil pounds ÷ pounds per foot

When converting pounds to usable finished footage, the calculator also removes the waste/setup percentage you enter. Treat the result as an ordering estimate and confirm the exact yield printed by your coil supplier.

Gutter size calculator using roof area and rainfall

A useful gutter size calculator needs more than house square footage. The amount of water reaching one gutter run depends on the horizontal projected roof area draining to it and the design rainfall intensity. The calculator converts those inputs to storm-water flow and applies published roof-gutter equations developed by the former National Bureau of Standards, now NIST.

Rain flow (gpm) = rainfall intensity (in/hr) × roof area (sq ft) × 0.0104

For a half-round level gutter, the planning equation is:

W = 0.0182 × (I × A)2/5

For a rectangular level gutter:

W = 0.0106 × M-4/7 × L3/28 × (I × A)5/14

W is gutter width in feet, I is rainfall intensity in inches per hour, A is projected roof area served by one outlet, M is gutter depth divided by width, and L is gutter length served by one outlet in feet. K-style mode uses a rectangular planning approximation with a 0.75 depth-to-width ratio rather than pretending the irregular K profile is literally rectangular.

How this compares with a SMACNA gutter calculator

SMACNA’s official downspout and gutter sizing app is based on Chapter 1 of its Architectural Sheet Metal Manual and notes that level-gutter capacities come from NIST testing. SMACNA also points users to current NOAA precipitation data and describes 50 feet as a practical maximum gutter length served by one downspout to limit thermal-expansion effects. This page is an independent calculator using publicly described equations and references; it is not the official SMACNA gutter calculator and should not be presented as a substitute for the manual, local code or professional design.

If you leave planned outlets at zero, the calculator automatically uses at least one outlet for each approximately 50 feet of run. If you override that count and create more than 50 feet per outlet, the result warns you to review the layout.

Which rainfall intensity should I enter?

Use the design rainfall required by the authority or method governing your project. SMACNA directs users to NOAA precipitation-frequency information because rainfall varies materially across the United States. The International Plumbing Code also sizes storm drainage from rainfall flow. Do not use a national average for a permit or engineered drainage design.

Seamless gutter cost calculator

The seamless gutter cost calculator mode estimates an installed range from linear footage, material, home height, roofline complexity and gutter size. For preset materials, the built-in 2026 planning model combines current material ranges with labor of about $4–$10 per foot for a one-story home or $5–$17 per foot for a two-story-or-higher home, then applies the project choices you enter. It intentionally returns a range instead of a single quote. Local access, finish, gauge, fascia repairs, permits and contractor overhead can move a real proposal outside that range.

Six-inch gutter adds a planning allowance because current cost guides commonly report a premium over standard 5-inch systems. Existing-gutter removal adds a separate project allowance. If you already have a contractor’s per-foot price, choose the custom installed-rate option for a more project-specific estimate.

This broad rain gutter cost calculator is useful for early budgeting. For a more detailed installation-only estimate with guards, removal, downspouts and project allowances, use the site’s dedicated Gutter Installation Cost Calculator as a second check.

Gutter cleaning cost calculator

Professional gutter cleaning is usually priced by gutter length and access difficulty. Current 2026 national guidance from Angi places typical cleaning around $0.95–$2.25 per linear foot overall, with story-specific ranges. The calculator starts with the published story range, then adjusts for heavy or severe buildup and steep-roof access. Optional downspout cleaning adds a separate $50–$100 planning allowance.

Home height 2026 reference cleaning rate
1 story $0.95–$1.25 per ft
2 stories $1.00–$1.85 per ft
3+ stories $1.25–$2.25 per ft

A steep roof can add about 15% in current cost guidance, while overdue or severely clogged gutters can take substantially longer to clean. Quotes can also include minimum service charges, travel, gutter-guard removal, repairs or debris disposal.

Worked gutter estimate example

Suppose a home has 160 feet of gutter. With a 5% material allowance, the purchase target is 168 feet. Using 10-foot stock sections means buying 17 sections. At 24-inch hanger spacing, the simplified total-footage estimate calls for about 81 hangers, while a 40-foot planning downspout spacing suggests four downspouts. Because real corners and separate runs affect cuts, verify each roof edge before ordering.

For drainage, suppose one 40-foot run receives 1,200 square feet of projected roof area at a 5-inch-per-hour design intensity. The calculator evaluates the NIST-based width equation for the selected profile and reports both the calculated minimum and the next nominal planning size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much gutter I need?

Add the lengths of the eaves or roof edges that will receive gutter, then add an allowance for cuts and waste. Do not automatically use the home’s floor square footage as gutter length because roof shapes and sections without gutter change the total.

Is this a gutter estimate calculator for both DIY and seamless projects?

Yes. The materials mode can estimate stock sections for a DIY sectional project, while the coil and seamless-cost modes address continuous gutter fabrication and professional seamless installation.

How accurate is the gutter coil calculator?

It uses published pounds-per-foot reference ratios for common aluminum coil specifications and also lets you enter a custom ratio. Supplier specifications control the final order because actual product weight and yield can vary.

Can this replace a SMACNA gutter sizing calculation?

No. The sizing mode follows publicly described NIST equations and SMACNA/IPC concepts for planning, but the official SMACNA app, adopted code, current NOAA rainfall data and project-specific professional design control where formal sizing is required.

Does the rain gutter cost calculator include cleaning?

Installation and cleaning are separate modes. Seamless installation uses per-foot construction ranges and project factors, while cleaning uses story-specific service rates plus access and debris adjustments.

What is the difference between this page and a dedicated gutter cleaning cost calculator?

The cleaning mode focuses on a quick national planning range from linear feet, stories, condition and access. A local cleaning company may price by minimum visit, roof complexity, guards, downspout clogs or travel rather than strictly by footage.

Methodology and sources

Material takeoff uses direct length, spacing and rounding arithmetic. Coil yield uses published weight-per-foot reference ratios with a custom override. Drainage flow uses the IPC rainfall conversion constant and NIST roof-gutter equations referenced by SMACNA; NOAA remains the source for location-specific precipitation-frequency data. Seamless installation and cleaning estimates use current 2026 national consumer cost ranges as planning inputs. Results are estimates for planning and comparison, not a contractor quote, structural design, code approval or guarantee of drainage performance.
