Wisconsin fee estimate
| Item | Estimated amount |
|---|
Wisconsin vehicle costs can include the base registration fee, title fee, local wheel tax, electric/hybrid surcharge, new-plate issuance fee and—when a vehicle is purchased—state and local sales tax. This calculator keeps those charges separate so you can see what is driving the total.
Current Wisconsin Registration Fees
WisDOT currently lists a regular automobile registration fee of $85 per year. Light trucks are $100 up to 4,500 or 6,000 pounds and $116.60 up to 8,000 pounds. Motorcycles and mopeds use a $23 biennial registration fee, while autocycles are $45 annually.
Electric automobiles and eligible light trucks are also subject to a $175 annual surcharge, while qualifying hybrid electric vehicles are subject to a $75 surcharge.
New Plate Issuance Fee in 2026
Wisconsin began collecting a new $6-per-plate issuance fee on April 13, 2026. Regular automobiles and light trucks generally require two plates, so a new set is $12. The fee does not apply when simply renewing or transferring existing plates.
Title, Lien and Wheel-Tax Costs
The current original/transfer title fee is $214.50 for most vehicles and $207 for a low-speed vehicle. A new security-interest listing is $10. A municipal or county wheel tax can also apply to automobiles and light trucks up to 8,000 pounds based on where the vehicle is customarily kept.
Wheel taxes change by locality and effective date, so the calculator uses an editable amount rather than freezing a long list of city/county charges into the plugin. WisDOT maintains the current official list.
How Wisconsin Vehicle Sales Tax Is Estimated
Wisconsin’s state sales tax is 5%. Many counties add 0.5%; Milwaukee County is 0.9%; and the City of Milwaukee adds 2%, producing a combined 7.9% rate for taxable vehicle purchases customarily kept in the city. Use the custom option when the DOR lookup shows another applicable total rate.
For a qualifying vehicle trade-in in the same transaction, Wisconsin generally taxes the purchase price after subtracting the trade-in allowance. The calculator therefore applies tax to purchase price minus trade-in, unless you select a valid exemption.
How Much Is It to Register a Car in WI?
For a standard gasoline automobile with an existing plate and no wheel tax, the current base registration fee is $85 per year. A new two-plate set can add $12. EV/hybrid surcharges and local wheel tax can raise the total.
How Much Are Tax, Title and License Fees in Wisconsin?
For a typical taxable vehicle purchase, start with the $214.50 title fee and the registration fee for the vehicle type, then add the applicable state/local sales tax, any wheel tax, fuel surcharge, lien fee and new-plate issuance charge. Because vehicle tax depends on purchase price, trade-in and location, there is no single flat tax-title-license amount.
