Washington Liquor Tax Calculator

Calculate Washington spirits sales tax and liter tax for packaged liquor, including consumer and licensed on-premises purchase rates.

Calculate Washington spirits sales tax and spirits liter tax for packaged spirits, or reverse a tax-included total to estimate the underlying selling price.

For Washington spirits (hard liquor) sold in the original container. Packaged spirits use Washington's special spirits sales and liter taxes; ordinary retail sales tax does not also apply to that packaged-spirit sale. By-the-drink sales and beer/wine rules are different.

Consumer rate: 20.5% spirits sales tax plus $3.7708 per liter.

This Washington liquor tax calculator estimates the special Washington taxes charged on spirits sold in the original container. For a consumer purchase, Washington currently imposes a spirits sales tax of 20.5% of the selling price plus a spirits liter tax of $3.7708 per liter.

The calculator can add those taxes to a pre-tax shelf/selling price or work backward from a total that already includes Washington spirits taxes. It also supports the lower rates that licensed on-premises retailers generally pay when purchasing spirits for resale by the drink.

WA Liquor Tax Calculator Rates

For the general public, the current packaged-spirits rates are:

  • Spirits sales tax: 20.5% of selling price.
  • Spirits liter tax: $3.7708 per liter.

For qualifying licensed on-premises retailers buying spirits from distributors, distillers or other authorized sellers, the current purchase rates are 13.7% of selling price plus $2.4408 per liter.

Washington State Liquor Tax Formula

When starting with a selling price before spirits taxes:

Spirits sales tax = selling price × applicable sales-tax rate

Spirits liter tax = total liters × applicable liter-tax rate

Total price = selling price + spirits sales tax + spirits liter tax

Because the liter tax is a fixed dollar amount per liter, the effective percentage tax burden is higher on lower-priced bottles and lower on more expensive bottles of the same volume.

Example: 750 mL Bottle

If a consumer buys a 750 mL bottle with a $15 selling price, the 20.5% spirits sales tax is $3.075 and the liter tax is approximately $2.8281. The combined Washington spirits taxes are about $5.90, producing a total near $20.90. Washington DOR publishes the same 750 mL example when explaining the spirits tax structure.

Does Washington Add Regular Sales Tax to Packaged Liquor?

No additional general retail sales tax applies to spirits sold in the original container to the consumer. Washington instead applies the special spirits sales tax and spirits liter tax. Drinks containing spirits sold by restaurants, bars and other on-premises establishments are treated differently and can be subject to regular retail sales tax.

What Counts as Spirits?

Washington DOR describes spirits as beverages obtained by distillation and also includes wines exceeding 24% alcohol by volume. Beer, ordinary wine and by-the-drink transactions have different tax rules, so this calculator should not be used for those purchases.

WA Liquor Tax Calculator vs a Receipt

Retailers must document the spirits taxes for purchasers. A real receipt or price list controls over this estimate because discounts, delivery charges, licensing status, exemptions or transaction structure can change the taxable selling price or applicable rate.
